Vista should be axed?

September 28th, 2007 No comments

Well, Dan Reisinger over at news.com thinks that Microsoft shoudld shelve Vista and move on.

Why Microsoft must abandon Vista to save itself | Tech news blog – CNET News.com

Much talk has been given to Service Pack 1 and how this update should address many of the issues users have with Vista, but I simply don’t agree. Will SP1 eliminate the ridiculous Microsoft licensing schemes? Will SP1 drop the price on the higher-end versions? Will SP1 eliminate the need for users to buy a new computer just to use the faulty OS? SP1 will do nothing but fix the holes and issues we currently know about and create even more. As we all know from the days of Windows ME and even XP, Microsoft is not the best company at finding and addressing security issues, and chances are, Vista will be no different.

Although I agree with some of its points, I cannot agree with the security claims. I’m certainly not known to be a Microsoft fanboy but I do think that they have been getting much better with their security record. I also do not think that Vista will be mothballed anytime soon, if not for the simple fact that computers will be getting (much) faster for years to come and as such the OS will be running faster as well. Will it still be a bloated albatross? Sure as hell. Will most customers care? Nope…
Adoption of Vista may be slow as compared to XP and Microsoft will undoubtedly feel some (financial) pain because of this. But in the long run it won’t matter much as most people will be ‘forced’ to go Vista in the end. Simply because of the fact that even XP will reach the end of its support period and Vista is all there is left. Vista’s successor is supposed to be completed in 3 years time, but I don’t think that Microsoft has its development lifecycle under control to a degree in which they can achieve that goal.
Now, where is that install CD….
